Dr. Kara Davis, MD. – New Book Connects Heart Health To Spiritual Health

Kara Davis BookHeart disease is the #1 killer in America today (600,000 annually) and keeping a healthy heart requires more than just diet and exercise according to noted medical doctor, Kara Davis. Her new book, Spiritual Secrets to a Healthy Heart: Uncovering the Roots of America’s Number One Killer (Siloam/Charisma House SRP: $14.99), discusses the wisdom of the Bible and combines it with hard medical facts to instruct spiritually-minded people how to improve their heart’s vigor and to adopt a healthier diet and a physically-fit lifestyle. “Our physical health is inextricably linked with our spiritual, mental and emotional health,” she writes in the introduction.” In the space of 216 pages, she argues that physical health is unavoidably linked with spiritual, mental, and emotional health—and that one can’t fully heal one area without addressing the others.

Over the course of nine informative chapters, Davis delves into all matters of the heart – physical and emotional. The chapters are spread between three sections. Part I is entitled “How We Live” and it boasts chapters on nutrition and its affect on the body; physical activity’s affect on our well-being; and the results of habits like alcohol consumption and smoking. Part II is “How We Feel” and addresses issues such as the power of gratitude, optimism vs. pessimism, relationships, the physical impact of emotions and stress, depression and how anger can damage the heart. Part III is “How It Is” and it covers hypertension, diabetes and even the environment’s affect on our health. There’s in-depth attention given to the role medications, vitamins, and flavonoids play in heart health.

“A positive or negative attitude has a strong influence on heart health,” says Davis. “In scores of studies examining the impact, the results are impressive. In these pages I cannot possibly cite all the research that identifies a connection between a pessimistic disposition and coronary illness— the data is far too extensive.”

Kara Davis, MD, is a board-certified physician of internal medicine and chief medical officer of Christian Community Health Center in Chicago. She previously served as an assistant professor of clinical medicine at the University of Illinois at Chicago, and she still maintains an appointment at the institution. Dr. Davis regularly sees patients with diseases influenced by lifestyle and who suffer the many related consequences. Her interactions and observations with these patients planted the seed for her book, Supernatural Secrets to Weight Loss: A 50-Day Renewal of Body, Mind, and Spirit, and national workshops and seminars that she now leads. In addition to her medical career she is a pastor’s wife and the mother of four children.
