Righteous Indignation is defined as retribution, retributive justice; anger and contempt combined with a feeling that it is one’s right to feel that way; anger without guilt
Psalms 69: verses 18 – 29
Draw close to me and redeem me; ransom and set me free because of my enemies [lest they glory in my prolonged distress]!19 You know my reproach and my shame and my dishonor; my adversaries are all before You [fully known to You].
20 Insults and reproach have broken my heart; I am full of heaviness and I am distressingly sick. I looked for pity, but there was none, and for comforters, but I found none.
21 They gave me also gall [poisonous and bitter] for my food, and in my thirst they gave me vinegar (a soured wine) to drink.
22 Let their own table [with all its abundance and luxury] become a snare to them; and when they are secure in peace [or at their sacrificial feasts, let it become] a trap to them.
23 Let their eyes be darkened so that they cannot see, and make their loins tremble continually [from terror, dismay, and feebleness].
24 Pour out Your indignation upon them, and let the fierceness of Your burning anger catch up with them.25 Let their habitation and their encampment be a desolation; let no one dwell in their tents.
26 For they pursue and persecute him whom You have smitten, and they gossip about those whom You have wounded, [adding] to their grief and pain.
27 Let one [unforgiven] perverseness and iniquities accumulate upon another for them [in Your book], and let them not come into Your righteousness or be justified and acquitted by You.28 Let them be blotted out of the book of the living and the book of life and not be enrolled among the [uncompromisingly] righteous (those upright and in right standing with God).29 But I am poor, sorrowful, and in pain; let Your salvation, O God, set me up on high.
God’s word decrees vengeance is mine, so we don’t have to worry about our enemies. Therefore, the heartaches and pains that we are enduring now is temporary because we are in the season for God’s righteous indignation.
We are under the judgement from God, so obey in all things, giving praise and honor to God, proclaiming the good news of the resurrection and the saving grace of the anointed one Jesus Christ our Lord. It’s a dangerous thing to fall into the hands of an angry God. We are the children of the Most High and that’s why I am sending you this encouragement and assurance about your enemies and hater’s (see verse 22 ) that what had been for their welfare will become a snare. This scripture tells us at the set time while they are building up and at their highest point suddenly they will be brought down. We are well aware of God’s righteous indignation being poured out in various areas of our country especially seen in the economy and big banks, mortgage companies, and Wall Street. There was even a movie about the Wall Street bail out, the movie titled: ” Too Big to Fail”. So they thought they had a shield that could not be penetrated.
How good it is and excellent to serve a living God who is concerned about every area of your life and well-being. David, in this scripture, was hiding and being pursued by Saul and was tired, desperate and repenting for all his sins, wanting and needing God’s mercy. You know the word “what the devil meant for bad is working for our good”. Not some things but all things work together for the good of them that love the Lord and are called according to His divine purpose.
I just want to remind you of what happened to Mordecai when Hammond set a trap for him, which reminds me of our modern-day popular quotes “You dig one ditch, you better dig two because the one you’re digging for me just might be for you; or, don’t throw stones when you’re living in a glass house”. Our faith is to remain stable even when we are under the most horrifying crisis and turmoil- hold fast to your faith. Be encouraged knowing at the right time and in the right season, God is going to execute His righteous indignation on your behalf.
Jesus, we decree that your word is true and we are holding fast to our faith and profession knowing that you are the author and finisher of our faith. We understand to be still and let the battle be waged and won by you our rock and defender. James tells us trial works patience and patience gives us endurance to stand, even when we know we have been wrongly accused and our reputation, character, and name is being slandered.
When you, the believers, are surrounded by haters, just rest on the promises. And, in spite of their wrong doing, pray for their misunderstanding so that their eyes may be opened and deliverance can come forth. Sometimes we know with all the prayers we pray and the unconditional love we give away without wavering, some will continue to be a hater. But let your haters be your motivators because the snare is upon them. Do good to them that despitefully use you. In doing so, you’re heaping coals of fire on their head.
How will the world know us? By our agape love for one another, walking in forgiveness. And if you have seen your sister or brother, father, mother, or neighbor fellow believer struggle in a flaw, weakness or unseemly character, don’t kick them when they’re down or put your mouth on them, because you are in danger of the snare being put on your life and under the righteous indignation of God. Amen
Help someone by loving them to live.
