"The Heart of Marriage"

You ever meet someone and even though you weren’t “bosom buddies” you know that your life was made better by simply being around them? The type of person that leaves such an impression that you find yourself thanking God that you could even glean just a little bit from their example?…I have. This past week we lost one of our sisters in the faith. She was a beautiful woman in every sense of the word. A lover of God. A servant, mother and a wife. A wife. It’s amazing. Even in her own pain my sister was still more concerned about her husband than herself. So much so that it was more than apparent to all of us that she was holding on until she felt he would be okay. And what’s even just as amazing is through it all I watched my big brother exemplify what it means to be a husband. No matter how tired he was he never quit on her.

Even when she was feisty with him in her discomfort, he didn’t wash his hands of her and decide that it was just too much. And it was in observing them, God took the time to remind me of what love really looks like. Love. I think sometimes we miss it. Some are so busy with superficial list and criteria and analytics that we’ve become a people who factor God into our “pop-psychology” rather than throwing out logic and making God the deciding factor. We want love as long as it comes in an easy, effortless package with a nice pretty bow.

Very few have neither the fortitude nor the patience to cultivate love so as a result we see microwave courtships. Followed by microwave marriages and soon followed-up by microwave divorces. And trust, I know the words I share don’t apply to all. In fact, I’m encouraged by what I see taking place, particularly amongst my generation. We’re shifting. In looking around I see God raising up a remnant that are approaching marriage with care. A generation that is turning the tide and changing the way marriage is perceived. He’s raising up women who purpose to honor and cater to their men and men who know how to care for and finesse their women. Truly, it’s a beautiful sight to see. And it is with that in mind that I shared a picture of love today. See, although my sister passing is something none of us wanted to see, I’m encouraged in gleaning from the legacy she left behind. Her life teaches us what is means to be devoted.

To work through the tough times. But most of all to love in the truest sense of the word. So, to all those like me. To those purposing to have God honoring marriages, I say press on! The world needs you. They need you to show them God’s original intent for marriage. They need you to show Christ’s love on display. And they need more cute little saved babies running around the earth…okay, maybe not so much on that last one, but you get my point (smile). Be led. Love without contingency. Lift The Savior.
