The election is over. You’ve had time to take it all in. Now what is your attitude? Elated or discouraged? Encouraged or fearful?

Let every person be quick to hear, slow to speak, slow to anger.
James 1:19
Your conversations with your family, friends or coworkers may bring many feelings to the surface. But Scripture has the best advice: “Be quick to hear, slow to speak, slow to anger.” (James 1:19) Careful listening combined with restrained speech helps temper responses. Selfish, worldly anger betrays lack of trust in God and a lack of love for others. As James additionally points out, “The anger of man does not produce the righteousness that God requires.” (James 1:20) So let your confidence in God – the knowledge that He is in control – give you encouragement. The Lord offers peace for your soul. And His injunction to you is still the same. Pray.

Intercede for the president and the newly elected members of Congress. Raise your pleas to the Lord that this nation, divided by loyalty to party and differences in ideology, would again be united through its acceptance of God as Creator and of Jesus as its Savior. His hand was present at the foundation of this republic. Pray He would give wisdom and guidance today.

In one of Aesop’s fables, a traveler was entertained by a satyr. It was cold, so the traveler blew on his fingers to warm them. A bit later, he blew on his bowl of broth to cool it. Appalled, the satyr said, “If you have gotten a trick of blowing hot and cold out of the same mouth, I’ve done with ye.”

Let your “yes” be yes and your “no” be no.
James 5:12
You know them…vacillators; wishy-washy Christians with a lack of commitment or an established point of view who blow hot one minute and cold the next. You can’t afford to be that way – especially now on America’s Election Day, the essential moment to stand firm with voting decisions based on right values, biblical concepts, and a clear conscience before the Lord.If you have not taken the opportunity to cast your vote either in early balloting or with a visit to your local precinct, be sure to do so before the polls close this evening. Voting is not only one of the rights you enjoy in America: it is an honor and a privilege. And the current choice may be one of the most important ones in your lifetime. Today is not for fence-sitting.

Keep yourselves in the love of God, waiting for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Jude 1:21

Everyone hates to wait – especially for answers from God…and particularly if, like Jude, you are dealing with scoffers, those who cause divisions and are “devoid of the Spirit.” (Jude 1:19) But as a Christian, you are called to persevere and to be patient. He will not withhold His mercy forever, and you will soon appreciate that it’s worth waiting for.

Today, keep yourself in the love of God by sharing it with others, and praying that He will continue to shed His grace and mercy on us.

That the word “mercy” appears in the Bible over 150 times indicates God is a merciful God. In John 5:18-20, Jesus says that whatever the Father did, He did. Christ showed mercy. Healed the sick. Delivered people from demons. Fed the crowds. Forgave the sinners. Taught those hungry for God. In today’s verse, the apostle Paul talks about believers having different gifts: prophecy, service, teaching, exhortation, giving, leadership…and acts of mercy. He says to show mercy cheerfully.

The one who does acts of mercy, with cheerfulness.
Romans 12:8
Whether showing mercy is part of your job like nursing, feeding the poor or perhaps serving in the justice system; or you only have opportunities to show mercy in little ways throughout the day, do it with a good attitude. As Bible teacher Charles Swindoll said, “I am convinced that life is 10 percent what happens to me and 90 percent of how I react to it. And so it is with you…we are in charge of our attitudes.”

There are consequences of not waking up…being late for work, missing an appointment, or more importantly, coming to the realization of a truth, but too late!

If you will not wake up, I will come like a thief, and you will not know at what hour.

Revelation 3:3

The sleepy city of Sardis had proven its indifference to attentiveness. It was an almost impregnable fortress located on a plateau about 1,500 feet above the main roads. Amazingly, it was captured on two occasions when sentries failed to do their jobs faithfully.

The same was true of the church at Sardis. It was in a coma – members blandly worshipping, lacking eagerness to learn or excitement to share the good news of the Gospel. The people neglected to be faithful to the charge God had given them. Their spiritual life was in decay. Their works were not found complete in His sight (Revelation 3:2). He told them to wake up, realize what was wrong, repent, and give evidence of their faith in Jesus…or judgment would follow.

Take note, Beloved. Live your life showing your passion for Christ and all He has done for you. Then intercede for this nation that the work God has planned for it would be revealed and embraced by its leaders.

The one who conquers…to him I will give authority over the nations.

Revelation 2:26

The church in Thyatira must have wondered if Christ would ever return. A “Jezebel” was misleading the servants there (Revelation 2:20). But John relayed encouragement from God, promising a day when those who would “keep my works until the end” (rest of Revelation 2:26) would be given authority through Christ.

Perhaps you have wondered if Christ will ever return to rescue you. Stay strong and continue to fight the battle before you. Jesus will appear again, and God will reign over all the nations.

You hold fast my name, and you did not deny my faith.

Revelation 2:13

Before focusing on others, look at yourself…starting with today’s verse. Do you have godly integrity, holding fast to Christ and authentically living what you believe? Timothy warned Christians, “But if anyone does not provide for his relatives, and especially for members of his household, he has denied the faith and is worse than an unbeliever.” (I Timothy 5:8) While on this Earth, Jesus was the perfect example of compassionate love being lived out every day with those whose paths He crossed. He has given you the directions and power to carry out the principles of compassionate love detailed in today’s recommended reading. To do anything less is to reject your very faith.

Humbly examine yourself. Then imagine a nation whose leaders practice God’s definition of compassionate love…and pray for a revelation.  Ask God to reveal to them how to love – and live – as He did. Believe for the extraordinary!

Maureen felt herself falling deeper into depression each day. She went to the doctors, but the antidepressants didn’t work. She knew the battle was in her mind. Every morning, she told herself, “God made me and loves me. He cares for me and answers my prayers.” No matter how bad she felt, she told herself these basic truths. Eventually her thinking became less negative and she moved forward with her life.
Know that the Lord, he is God!…We are his people, and the sheep of his pasture.
Psalm 100:3
The Bible says, “See what kind of love the Father has given to us, that we should be called children of God.” (I John 3:1) It declares, “If you then, who are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father who is in heaven give good things to those who ask him!” (Matthew 7:11) It encourages you to cast “all your anxieties on him, because he cares for you.” (I Peter 5:7)

If your life seems to be getting out of hand, read these scriptures and similar ones as faithfully as you would take prescribed pills. Then pray that the people of this nation will hear His voice and entrust themselves to the Heavenly Father’s care.

The Olympics have expanded to include thousands of participants from countries all over the world – each striving to emerge victorious and earn a gold medal.

To the one who conquers I will grant to eat of the tree of life, which is in the paradise of God.

Revelation 2:7

Similar to the triumphant Olympians, the phrase the one who conquers in today’s verse refers to one who carries off the victory and defeats all his foes, and includes a sense of perseverance and holding fast…not to a game, but to one’s faith in Christ. The difference is the win is available to all who finish the race and the prize is better than gold.

Through Jesus, who has conquered all, the victor is given the gift of life and the freedom to enjoy it in all of its fullness for eternity in the very presence of God. Today, spend time in quiet confession before the Lord, releasing anything that has become an obstacle for you or weighs down your faith.
